Is something missing in your life? Are you looking for purpose, peace, acceptance, or significance? The truth is, God lovingly made you with a plan in mind. Part of that plan is that you would have a personal relationship with Him. In that relationship there is purpose, peace, acceptance, and significance.
How can anyone have a personal relationship with God? Two problems stand in the way. First, knowing the unknowable, understanding the incomprehensible… God. Second, the problem of sin, a barrier that stands between us and a relationship with a holy God.
Both problems are solved in a person called Jesus Christ. Jesus came to this earth and became a man in order to solve the “knowing God” problem. He came to reveal God to us. He could do that because He is God. Only God can reveal God. In the Bible there is a book that was written that tells us about it. The Gospel of John, the fourth book in the New Testament, says that Jesus was God’s Word to us, and He has explained God to us. (John 1: 14 – 18)
God did this because He loves us and wants a relationship with us. However, our sin still stands in the way. None of us would argue that we have sinned in some way in our lifetime. Some of us have sinned a lot! How much we’ve sinned is not the issue. One small drop of arsenic in an otherwise pure glass of water poisons it. One small sin poisons us and makes us unfit for a relationship with a holy God.
Incredibly, Jesus came to solve our sin problem. Although He never sinned even once, He died for the sins of others. (II Corinthians 5: 21; Hebrews 4; 15) We did the crime, He did our time! By doing that, Jesus made it possible for us to be forgiven and be brought into relationship with God.
That relationship comes as a gift from God. Gifts cannot be earned. They are simply accepted. Too many well intentioned people are doing all they can to please God, yet never doing it. It has already been done for them by Jesus. He pleased God when He paid for our sins with His death. Now we can please God when we accept what Jesus has done for us. It is difficult for us to realize that this is freely offered. However, it is a gift. It cannot be earned, it must be received to become ours.
How can this gift be received? It is almost too simple. Just ask for it. That’s all! “For whoever will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10: 13) That is the promise of God. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6: 23)
When you ask for the gift of eternal life, it becomes yours by faith. “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast.” (Ephesians 2: 8, 9) It is like being born again! Jesus called it that in John 3: 1-7, in a conversation with a religious leader.
When we receive Jesus’ gift of eternal life, it is the beginning of a new journey. We start to follow Jesus, learning His way and walking in it. He becomes our Lord and our Leader. He leads us in an adventure of faith until the day we are with Him forever.
If you would like to receive this gift of eternal life, just pray this simple prayer from your heart: “Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. I know I cannot do anything to change that. I now turn from my sin and my efforts to deal with it, to You. By faith in what You’ve promised, I accept your gift of eternal life. Thank You for forgiving all my sin and giving me your righteousness. Help me to follow you as my Lord and Leader. Amen.”
